Empower & Support

Cultural Connections bridges the gap between transnational students and the educational system by offering resources to understand and address the unique challenges faced by transnational families.

We aim to:

  • Empower parents and families of transnational students by providing resources to understand their rights and advocate for their children.

  • Support educators in creating a compassionate and culturally responsive learning environment that honors diversity and promotes mental well-being.

Our Story

In the summer of 2024, we embarked on a transformative study abroad course in Oaxaca, Mexico. Part of this course was to develop an advocacy project related to the experience. What began as an academic exploration evolved into a mission to address the challenges transnational students and families face.

The Spark of Inspiration During our time in Oaxaca, we participated in intense Spanish/Zapoteco language courses, exposing us to the difficulties of learning a new language and adapting to a different cultural environment. As we grappled with the complexities of language acquisition, we recognized parallels between our own experiences and those of students navigating the U.S. education system while adapting to a new culture and language.

Connecting the Dots Back in San Antonio, we channeled our experiences into developing a comprehensive toolkit for educators and families. Our journey has highlighted the need for ongoing dialogue and support for transnational students, reflecting our commitment to creating a more inclusive educational environment.
